My name is Monica, I'm a 29 year old single Mum from Adelaide, SA. When I was 21 I was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer, 6 months later I was diagnosed with Pancratic Cancer. I recieved chemo and radiotherapy treatments which thankfully worked and went into remission. Then shortly after I gave birth to my son in 2014, I underwent more chemotherapy after an englarged lymph node showed up on a routine scan. After 6 months of chemo I went into remission again, and have been cancer free since.
I am keeping up with regular scans and blood tests as this was all brought on by a genetic disposition called "Lynch Syndrome", which is a known to bring on gastrointestional cancers from a younger age. I was in the 0-1% of people who are disagnosed with a cancer linked to Lynch Sydrome between the ages of 20-25.
Experiencing all of that was nothing in comparison to having to deal with my grief after losing my Mum in April of 2015 to Kidney Cancer (also linked to Lynch Syndrome), my Dad in June 2017 to Leukaemia, my Grandpa (Dad's Dad, aged 94), and then my niece, Abigail, who was killed in a car accident 5 weeks before her 2nd birthday.
I am walking the Great Wall of China to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. They were a great support to Dad as he had to travel over 600km every week for treatment for 5 months and we can't thank them enough for their assistance.
I am also walking the wall for all the family I've lost, to keep making them proud. I am walking the wall for my son, as he is the reason for my strength. I am walking the wall my family and my friends, those who are still standing by my side and giving their support. I am walking the wall for me, to help overcome my grief so I can be everything I can be for my son.
100% of donations given goes directly to the Leukaemia Foundation, so please donate! No donation is too small as every little bit helps.
