Keira has been wanting to donate her hair for the past few years. She has finally reached a length long enough to donate and is super excited.
Her motivation - her mums best friend Lara.
Lara was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2017 and it changed her world.
To give back to the foundations that helped Lara through her hard times Keira wants to donate her hair to make much needed wigs and her family wants to help her fundraise.
So if you would like Keira to reach her goal please donate today! Because on the 26th of August Keira will cut her plaits off for the Leukaemia Foundation.
For Lara and the people who have endured this horrible disease 💕
Lara’s Story
After experiencing weird symptoms for over a year and countless visits to doctors, I received my devasting diagnosis of Hodgkin's Lymphoma in May 2017. I had the 'good' cancer, one which was highly curable. It turns out, it wasn't so good after all! I've had numerous treatment protocols including chemotherapy, radiation, auto stem cell transplant, and immunotherapy to get me into remission but within months of finishing treatments, the cancer always returned.
In August 2020 I underwent my second life-saving stem cell transplant with donated stem cells from an anonymous 21-year-old German male (for whom I am forever grateful). This procedure involved a four-month-long stay away from home with four weeks spent in an isolated hospital ward (without visitors because of a COVID lockdown!!) and a further three months as an outpatient attending appointments, tests, reviews, check-ups, and procedures. The Leukaemia Foundation relieved the financial burden by providing free accommodation near the hospital for me and my two selfless carers – my mum and my fiancé.
An allogeneic stem cell transplant is by far the most physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging thing I've ever faced but I am here today, one year later, and still in remission. And the added bonus...ridiculously curly hair! I wouldn't have made it through my cancer journey without the support of my fiancé, family, close friends, and my beautiful cat.
Other ways to help include donating blood at an Australian Red Cross Lifeblood and registering with the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry.
