I’m helping to beat blood cancer by taking part in the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave!
Every day, 53 Aussies are diagnosed with blood cancer, and 16 will lose their life.
For me the number is: 14 months and 14 days.
That's how long my mum (Vickie) had with us following her diagnosis with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) in August 2021.
A clinical trial had changed the decade-long treatment plan for AML, and it was one of those drugs that helped her go into remission, giving us more time together. I know that without funding, clinical trials and advances in treatment and healthcare are not possible, and that is why I am doing Shave for a Cure.
The day I'm officially starting this fundraiser is on 7th June, which would have been mums 75th birthday, and it is also why I have a goal to raise $7,500.
The day I'm ending the fundraiser is on Sept 15th is a total of 14 weeks and 2 days reflecting mums experience. It is also during Blood Cancer Awareness Month which seems somewhat fitting.
The passing of my mum showed me that we really don't know what will come to us in the future and that we need to make the most of our time. I will be honouring my mum by doing something each week of the fundraiser, whether it's baking a 3 tiered cake, re-learning how to ride a bike, or donating blood to help others like mum, it's all about making the most of our time.
I hope you will join me in celebrating life and supporting this fundraiser!
