I’m helping to beat blood cancer by taking part in the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave!
Every day, 53 Aussies are diagnosed with blood cancer, and 16 will lose their life. For me the number is: 14 months and 14 days. That's how long my mum (Vickie) had with us following her diagnosis with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) in August 2021. A clinical trial had changed the decade-long treatment plan for AML, and it was one of those drugs that helped her go into remission, giving us more time together. I know that without funding, clinical trials and advances in treatment and healthcare are not possible, and that is why I am doing Shave for a Cure. The day I'm officially starting this fundraiser is on 7th June, which would have been mums 75th birthday, and it is also why I have a goal to raise $7,500. The day I'm ending the fundraiser is on Sept 15th is a total of 14 weeks and 2 days reflecting mums experience. It is also during Blood Cancer Awareness Month which seems somewhat fitting. The passing of my mum showed me that we really don't know what will come to us in the future and that we need to make the most of our time. I will be honouring my mum by doing something each week of the fundraiser, whether it's baking a 3 tiered cake, re-learning how to ride a bike, or donating blood to help others like mum, it's all about making the most of our time. I did it!!! Hot-air ballooning!!! A major life goal achieved with my closest friend :smiling_face_with_3_hearts: The 3am wake-up and hour drive to our launch spot at Beaudesert was well worth it! The views were just stunning and there was this sense of such calm (apart from when the burners were turned on). We went so high, we could see for an eon, but then we went low enough we could hear the birds morning calls :parrot::bug::sunrise_over_mountains::notes: The ride is very smooth and even the landing was softer than I thought. If you aren't afraid of heights I definitely recommend putting #hotairballoon on the bucket list! I truly don't think I would have done this so soon without #14weeks2days giving me the drive to do so. I realised I've missed posting my last few weeks activities as part of my #14weeks2days ! In part because time is just flying by, but also because they have been the simple things :smiling_face_with_3_hearts: I had a baking weekend, where I made my own herb butter, and tried two different methods to make bread (plus threw a banana bread into the mix as well). There was something so fulfilling about having a piece of toast with butter that I had made. No idea once again why I left things to try so late (which is the main reason for thr whole #14weeks2days part of my #shaveforacure). A friend casually mentioned making cheese, which I hadn't even considered! So there might be a cheese post coming soon! I've also been trying to spend some more of my weekend time in the garden. Mum loved her plants and while her knees didn't help her later in life, we always had beautiful gardens. I have a lot of work to do to even come close, but I'm starting small with a little veggie plot that dad helped put together, and it's coming along nicely! I've had all these ideas on how to make the most of #14weeks2days but just because I have this goal and want to :sparkles:? make the most of life :sparkles:? it doesn't mean that all the other life things stop. Work stress, financial insecurity, body aches and pain, fatigue and the realisation we are half-way through 2023 is still *all there* This week I haven't done anything *new or noteworthy* and feel rather like a fraud...but I did make myself go to a performing arts event where my friend played as part of a drum circle (which was amazing). Naturally I took #missmaggie and we had a moment of reflection while watching the sunset. It hit me again how it really is all the little moments and how open we are to seeing them for their value. Because they are not big and flashy it's sometimes harder to see them for what they are. So my little #momentsofmeaning this weekend was the sunset walk with Maggie, joining Dad and #MissMaisie for their first visit to the dog park, and reuniting #MisterArchie with Maisie :dog::dog: I hope you too can find some little moments of meaning in your day-to-day life :sparkles:? :smiling_face_with_3_hearts: https://secure.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/registrant/imageWriter.aspx?ElementPropertyID=11455326

Mum received numerous blood and platelet infusions while she was in hospital - all thanks to the generous donations of people just like you and me. It's something so easy to give, yet it has taken me until my #shaveforacure fundraiser to think of it as being I should and can do. Why? I'm not quite sure but I hope to make it a regular thing from now on. My local donation centre stopped taking blood and platelet, but they do plasma which is not something I had heard of until today. There are 18 uses for #plasma including helping those with immune deficiencies and to help prevent infections following bone marrow transplants. It is truly amazing! As part of my #14weeks2days goal to 'help others', I donated some plasma! It didn't go completely to plan - my veins are apparently deep and were troublesome to find (even with proper hydration!). There was a slight hiccup when the blood/saline mix was returned so I was unable to donate my full amount (and have a hefty bruise) but I'm not put off by any means! You can donate plasma every two weeks, and hopefully I can reach my target amount next time! If you can't donate to my fundraiser for Vickie please think about donating blood, platelets or plasma. I've just realised there is an App for fundraising and also an easier way to keep everyone who has supported me in the know about my activites. I plan to make the most of the #14weeks2days by doing #lifethings (a new hashtag maybe?) essentially not putting off things I want to do in life. Finances always play a part so most of my items are on the more simple side, but which could be the more important in the long run. I've baked some goods, donated blood products and led the simple life in baking bread and tending to my garden. i have no spectacular ambitions (apart from selling an artwork) and I want to emphasise the day-to-day pleasures. So, who knows? this might become something bigger or it might just become what it needs to be.
