For Pete it was a cough, he simply couldn’t shake it. Because of Covid-19 he didn’t want to go to work until he was clear. But it wasn’t clearing and he had noticed some other symptoms, like enlarged lymph nodes. The Doctor requested a blood test, which Pete took at 11.30am, Tracey the Haematologist rang him at 2pm and told him to pack a bag and get into hospital. By 4pm Pete was told he had Leukaemia. Pete now starts the fight to get this cancer under control, to get him to Adelaide for a Bone Marrow transplant. Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) is characterised by the overproduction of immature white blood cells, called lymphoblasts or leukaemic blasts. Because the bone marrow is unable to make adequate numbers of red blood cells, normal white cells and platelets, people with ALL become more susceptible to anaemia, recurrent infections, and can tend to bruise and bleed more easily.
